Nurtureshock, subtitled “New Thinking About Children,” is a new book by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman which presents the idea that many of modern society’s strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring – because key twists in the science have been overlooked. As an example, in Chapter Four of the book they explain studies which refute the long-held perception that children will outgrow lying: “…children don’t start out thinking lies are okay, and gradually realize they’re bad. The opposite is true. They start out thinking all deception — of any sort — is bad, and slowly realize that some types are okay.”
A detailed analysis of the inverse value of praising a child’s achievements, published this month to a wealth of media coverage, Nurtureshock promises to “…change how you think about the kids in your life, and make you rethink how you became who you are. ”
