HEM’s Questions & Answers – March-April 2010

3books“Subscribing to lots of publications (daily newspapers, weekly science magazines, lots of monthly magazines) is a highly enriching part of education in our house. But economic realities mean that we have to cut way down. This doesn’t make the avid readers in our family of kids from 9 to 17 very happy. What are your picks for most valuable periodicals?” -Sarah Quinn

We too love our periodicals!!. However, last year we got a double whammy; we moved overseas (to a place without a decent library) and also had a greatly reduced income (so no money to continue all of our subscriptions).

To keep life interesting, at the beginning of each month, I would gather our old magazines from the same month but from a few years back, and put them in an easily accessible basket. This allowed us to enjoy seasonal topics in the right time of the year, as well as creating a sense of newness each month. And because of the wide age range in my family (like yours) my younger children were now ready to read (and understand more deeply) material that had been purchased previously for an older sibling.

And of course, as all readers of HEM know, you can limit your periodicals to those which are not found in your local library, or in a free electronic online source.

Now to answer the original question, my vote for most valuable periodicals, in no particular order, and covering varying ages/topics:

Muse, Spider and all other Cricket magazines; Smithsonian; New Yorker; Home Education; NY Times; Living Crafts; and Popular Science.

I would like to recommend the series “Finance for Kidz” I have never seen anything like that.
My kids loved reading it. They are already using these concepts when we go shopping.
