Ree Drummond, aka the Pioneer Woman, shares a journey into plein air in this beautifully illustrated post from last fall:

“One of my favorite things to do during days of homeschooling is to throw down the books, forsake our studies (that’s actually my favorite part), and take the kids outside with their travel watercolor sets. My girls have kept “nature journals” since our homeschooling journey began—small books of watercolor paper wherein they paint sights they see on our “nature walks”. Sometimes they’ll paint a single rock they see in a pasture. Sometimes they’ll paint a bird, if the sucker stays still long enough. Other times, they’ll paint the water running in the creek…or a wildflower…or a caterpillar…or a tree. Ahhh, it’s enough for me to dig out my Birkenstocks and start singing Where Have All the Flowers Gone. It’s so nice to be one with nature.”
