Milspeak for Civilians

As a courtesy to the readers of Home Education Magazine the following glossary of acronyms and explanations should assist in reading the article on military homeschooling.

Active duty: Term applied to any person, officer or enlisted, Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Coast Guardsman or Merchant Marine actively employed by his or her appropriate service.

ASG: Area Support Group - overseas military version of a county

ASG Commander: The head of the "county," were there such a position

BSB: Base Support Battalion - overseas military version of a small town

BSB Commander: The "small town's "mayor"

CENTCOM: Central Command headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida

CINC: Commander in Chief

CONUS: Continental United States

DDESS: Defense Domestic Education School System - the school system within the continental United States

DoD: Department of Defense

DoDDS: Department of Defense Dependent Schools - the school system outside the continental United States

DoDEA: Department of Defense Educational Activity; the parent activity of DDESS and DoDDS

ESC: European Schools Council

EUCOM: European Command The overall military command for Europe through which the DoD communicates with the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine forces stationed in Europe.

Host nation: Any country "hosting" another country's military force

HQ or hq: Abbreviation for "headquarters"

HSWG: Home School Work Group - the working group which will consider the information gathered from the homeschool focus group meetings.

Local national: Any citizen of a host nation

MARFOREUR: Marine Forces Europe

OSD: Office of the Secretary of Defense overseas: Outside the Continental United States; in a foreign country

SOFA: Status of Forces Agreement - a treaty-type document negotiated at the diplomatic level spelling out the particulars of one country's military force being stationed in another country.

Theater: A geographic area where military operations are coordinated.

USAFE: United States Air Force Europe

USAREUR: United States Army Europe

USNAVEUR: Unites States Naval Forces Europe

UCMJ: Uniform Code of Military Justice This is the basic military law under which all active duty personnel are held accountable.
