APRIL’S HIGHLIGHT- Interview with Tabitha Orr

I recently interviewed Tabitha Orr, the New Mexico Homeschool Community 2008 Fair Coordinator. This is the second year she organized the event and this year they were sponsored in part by a local community college. I wanted to learn how this happened and Tabitha agreed.

Thanks for talking to us Tabitha! Please tell us a little bit about your group, New Mexico Home School Community and how it came to be.

Tabitha: In 2005 after contacting several local museums looking for classes for my daughters I was repeatedly told that homeschoolers are too hard to advertise and get in touch with regularly so they just did not really hold organized classes to often if at all. One museum actually had to cancel programs geared toward homeschoolers because they could not get anyone to sign up.

Explora-a hands on science center in Albuquerque-said they would hold classes if I could get the students but that they doubted I would be able to get enough to get the minimum number needed for the classes. Having moved to New Mexico 5 years before I had gained a lot of contacts in the homeschooling community by going to park days and attending various events with groups around Albuquerque. This sounded like a challenge, I knew there were hundreds of families homeschooling in our area that would love these science classes. I started an email campaign and ended up registering 7 classes, flooring the museum who proudly started their Home School Science Club.

Using this success I approached other museums, businesses and entities to ask them to send me information on upcoming classes and events so that I could advertise them to the homeschooling community. In essence I became a virtual bulletin board disseminating information to families to enhance their homeschooling experience. When classes started being created, advertised and filled I realized that this was the missing link for our community that went beyond the word of mouth or the actual individual groups. This was (and still is) many groups and individuals working together getting the information on opportunities to all of our families and most importantly communicating regardless of which group we were 'in' or how we actually homeschooled.

In an effort to do something to benefit my own children I have succeeded in creating an organization that now reaches over 1,000 individuals and groups throughout the State of New Mexico as well as the bordering states and have just recently connected to groups in the Southwest through the Southwest Home Educators Association.

Mary: Last year you had your first New Mexico Homeschool Community Fair. Where did that take place and how did you go about planning for it?

Tabitha: The first fair was actually held in March 2007 as a test fair for myself and for the community, it was basically about 20 families selling or swapping their used materials. I did not advertise but just used word of mouth to let everyone know and we ended up with about 150 people coming, which was huge at the time and really quite the surprise. We do have a large statewide organization that holds an annual fair and while they welcome all homeschoolers to attend I had heard that parents wanted a more inclusive event.

In August 2007 I decided to hold a fair that would be a true community event, the 'Not Back to School Fair' the Friday after public schools returned to school. We used a community center that had shown to be extremely accommodating to homeschooling groups in the past and they were the location we used for the 'test fair' in March. The community center provided a fabulous staff, large conference room, tables, chairs and allowed us to use their gym as well as outside spaces for larger activities. It was up to me to advertise, register and organize the groups that wanted to do demonstrations. It wasn't too difficult to convince businesses and organizations that this would work but I did have to spend time with emails and phone calls. But not charging a fee for the tables and no entrance fee allowed groups who had the time to take a chance on our event.

The really hard part was the actual planning and advertising. Measuring the spaces and the tables and laying them out on a to scale diagram and figuring out the registration process and working out space/demonstration needs. I have never done any event planning so it was very stressful to keep up with all the information, get the word out and then get it set up the way it was supposed to that morning. It definitely kept me up nights, especially the night before the fair.

Mary: How did that event turn out?

Tabitha: It was unbelievable actually, to see all the hard work come together as everyone started to set up. Throughout the day I watched all these different families, groups and businesses together in one room talking to families. Here were kids climbing the rock wall provided by the City of Albuquerque, watching the K9 demonstration, a puppet show, the fencing demonstration, talking to a textbook provider and a spokesperson for the X-Prize group or signing up and getting information on classes they did not know existed-whole families learning more about homeschooling, I think it really hit home with me that this was working. We could have a fair where different homeschooling groups were represented regardless of style of homeschooling or beliefs and a multitude of educational opportunities could be available to be discovered by that child or adult really looking for the class that can help them on their journey to life learning.

I could not help but laugh when the community center staff came to tell me that they were not getting much work done and helping me count all the people entering the community center-they said they were stopping at 700 and the fair was not over.

The true measure of the fair came when a mom who waited till everyone had left to tell me she had never felt so welcomed. That her past homeschooling experiences had been situations where she has had to hide who she was and her beliefs but that this fair opened her eyes to the wide variety of choices available to her family in our community.

Mary: Tell us about this years upcoming New Mexico Homeschool Community 2008 Fair.

Tabitha: It is basically the same as August 2007 but this time we have classrooms for structured educational presentations or classes such as puppet making and zoology. We will have more demonstrations, animals, and opportunities for volunteering with community service projects. One of the things I am most proud of is the large number of homeschooling support, public service departments, museums and variety of businesses that will be attending. Learning is everywhere and will be shown to be found in every facet of our community through this event.

Mary: As I understand it, this years fair is being sponsored by Central New Mexico (CNM) Community College. How did this come about?

Tabitha: A couple of weeks after last August I received an unsolicited email from Phillip Bustos, Vice President of Student Services at CNM that they heard about our August event and wanted to contribute to next year's event by offering one of their facilities free of charge. He also went on to discuss the resources available for homeschooling families, data on the homeschoolers that have attended their school and contributed to their college.

Mary: How has this changed the fair from last year?

Tabitha: Being at the community college brings not only a larger venue but opens peoples eyes to more educational opportunities and partnerships. I personally am receiving a lot of logistical and technical support from the staff at CNM whereas in the past I have worked on my own. This was a huge relief and they have exceeded my expectations in this joint venture. Also, I did not have to convince anyone to attend this time, people had already heard about the event and I was fielding requests to have space at the fair before I even opened registration.

Mary: What is your biggest challenge when planning this type of event?

Tabitha: Organizing all the incoming information takes precedence over everything else, making sure you have the right information for each group attending and then plugging them in to a layout based on their needs-it can get very tedious and be time consuming. Getting volunteers has been a huge task but it just means you have to get creative and ask for help in unusual places. For example we asked teen groups, community service groups and student services at the community college in exchange for booth space to fund raise. Another challenge has been in keeping the fair free to allow those thinking about homeschooling to take a chance and come see who we are and for the homeschooling families who are struggling financially to be able to find resources they can use. One of my personal goals has been time management and making sure I am not overdoing it by keep my priorities of family and homeschooling balanced with the many tasks of setting up and running a fair.

Mary: What did you enjoy the most about this event?

Tabitha: Meeting everyone, talking to the many different families. Walking around and hearing comments from mothers, fathers, grandparents who were convinced that homeschoolers just sat at home and recreated school at home, who regularly gave the socialization speech as the one reason why they were against homeschooling. Then leaving the fair with a look of amazement and at all the educational opportunities available to our children. What was funny when some of these parents came and told me how normal we all were. I even had 'old time' homeschoolers say they did not realize all that was really out there for the kids. I expect the May 2008 fair to be just as fulfilling and helpful to our community. And open the eyes of many to the realities of homeschooling.

Mary: What advise can you share with others who might want to work with a college as you have?

Tabitha: There are a lot of supporters for homeschooling at the college level you just need to search them out. You will make a lot of phone calls and send a ton of emails in the beginning. Let them know your ideas and how valuable a learning experience they can be to our children. Don't be afraid to adapt and mesh your needs with theirs, compromise can be good. Keep trying till you find the right people to work with to achieve your goal. If you never try and never ask you will never know what you can achieve.

Mary: Thanks so much for sharing!

ISSUES BEING WATCHED

One homeschool parent was surprised when she received her test packet from the Family Learning Organization this month and it included a letter from HSLDA promoting a homeschool survey. You can read why many of us oppose these types of surveys via these posts:

Homeschoolers are remaining vigilant across the country, protecting their freedoms and working to prevent any further regulations. Homeschoolers in CA, CT, NE, D.C., MI, NH and TN are all letting their legislators know they DO NOT want further regulation. Here are the headlines along with links to the reports.

Schoolhouse Conference

On behalf of Schoolhouse, Scotland's national home education support organisation (and great friends of HEM!) I am delighted to confirm that we are planning to hold a conference to celebrate International Freedom in Education Day in Arbroath, Angus, over the weekend of 12th/13th/14th September 2008.

We are all especially delighted to announce that John Taylor Gatto has agreed to be our keynote speaker, with other speakers to be confirmed shortly.

A formal conference for individuals and public, private and voluntary sector representatives will run alongside a more family orientated gathering on the Friday, while an informal conference for families and interested individuals will run throughout Saturday and on Sunday morning.

We will be teaming up with local charity Angus Arts (run by home educators) to put together an exciting and varied programme of activities. We also hope to secure assistance from members of the Arbroath Pageant Society to cover the historical perspective.

Coincidentally, the date of our announcement happens to be the 688th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath.

"Given at Arbroath Abbey on the sixth day of April AD 1320, the Declaration of Arbroath was seminal in its eloquent plea for the liberty of man. It affirmed Scotland's Nobles' allegiance to Robert the Bruce as their king and declared the right of the Scottish nation to self-determination. This created a tradition in the Scottish understanding of rights which reached its peak in the Scottish Enlightenment, and the philosophers of the eighteenth century who set the tone for our modern understanding of human rights. Many now see it as a precursor to the US Constitution and the UN Declaration of Human Rights." http://www.angusahead.com/VisitAngus/AboutAngus/History.asp

All who have already expressed an interest in attending the conference will be sent full details as soon as they are available. We would ask you to please bear with us a little longer while these are finalised as we have only just received confirmation of the required top-up funding for this event and there is still some number crunching to do.

Please email media@schoolhouse.org.uk if you wish to be added to the mailing list for updates.

We look forward to welcoming home educators and all those with an interest in education to this international celebration of diversity and freedom in education.

Alison for the Schoolhouse Management Committee
