Home-schoolers propel Huckabee, 9 December 2007, Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee’s rise in Iowa may have been a surprise to many, but not to a tightly knit group of social conservatives with something fundamental in common.

Thousands of evangelical Christians who school their children at home have found a candidate they can support in Huckabee, and they provide the former Arkansas governor’s outsider campaign with hundreds of volunteers.

Although not monolithic, home-schooling Republicans are united by core principles, especially their rejection of public schools in favor of their own religious-based teaching.

I’m a former-Republican turned Independent, so I can no longer speak to the unanimity of homeschooling Republicans. However, I was still Republican while homeschooling, and I didn’t reject “public schools in favor of … religious-based teaching.”

Any Republicans out there who would care to comment on their political preferences?

Let’s see…I consider myself evangelical Christian, and conservative, although I increasingly feel that I don’t fit in the Republican Party. I think we are united by a core principle, but it isn’t a rejection of public schools but rather an acceptance of our own responsibilities.

I liked this article. That phrase “although not monolithic” really struck me given the presentation across the news organizations at the moment. Monolithic is exactly what came to mind, even before I read this one.

I think it fits in with their own stereotypes about homeschooling in general and Christian homeschooling in particular.

Oh, forgot to actually answer the questions. Huckabee isn’t exactly my first choice, but I haven’t figured out who is.

I don’t know who my first choice is either — Democrat, Republican or anything else. A while ago, somewhere online, I played with a ‘which candidate do you most resemble’ survey, and the answers were a jumble of a variety of top runners … and some not so top runners. I’m still watching.
