Sometimes, public school just isn’t a good fit — some children don’t do well in large classes, some need more individual attention than their busy teachers can provide, and some parents may not be pleased with the results.

But private schools are expensive. So what’s a parent to do?
School them at home.

The state Education Department has a page of frequently asked questions regarding home schooling. No, your child does not have to take state tests. No, the local Board of Education is not required, nor are they authorized, to review home schooling curriculums. Nor are parents teaching their children at home required to be a certified teacher in New Jersey.

But what about socialization and providing opportunities for home-schooled students to interact with others?

“That’s called the ’s’ word,” [Nancy McVicker, director of the New Jersey Home School Association] said. “It’s really not a problem.”
