In the April 1 edition (no, it was NOT an April Fool’s joke) this zinger quote was included in commentary noting that sales of children’s books rose during Spring Vacation and Easter Vacation.
"’Whenever the children are out of school, we see a pickup in sales and traffic in our children’s department,’ explains Josalyn Moran, director of children’s books for Barnes & Noble. So what we’re saying, essentially, is that if you want kids to read, you’ve got to get ‘em out of school. Hmm."
What we’ve been saying for years, but with a market twist? Hmm is right.
My children read more now. Once I removed them from school and they had a bit of time to “unwind” from school, they began to read on their own. They seemed to enjoy reading and became quite content. I’ll never put my son back in school again! He’s so much happier at home. Reading is a pleasure now. While in school it was very unpleasant and he was unhappy. Thank God we have a choice!
Thanks for sharing this story. What a wise parent you are to allow your children time to unwind after what must have been a difficult school experience.
It is such a joy for us as parents to watch our children discover the pleasure of reading. That joy must be much greater for parents like you who have watched a child move from disliking reading to rediscovering it as satisfying.
Yes, let’s hear it for choice!
