Jefferson County Public Schools are getting some parental feedback about school building choice. One 5 year old’s parent ‘left the building’ to keep her daughter off the bus and very close to home.
Amy Ashley left JCPS offices having just filed her frustration.
“At this point I’ve already mailed my letter to home school my daughter this school year,” she says.
Why? Because Amy and her 5-year-old daughter Camryn live in Valley Station just blocks from Watson Lane Elementary. But instead of starting kindergarten there, the student assignment plan will put Camryn on a bus to ride five miles to Valley High School where the 5-year-old will then have to change buses and ride another eight miles inside the Watterson to Cane Run Elementary.
The shuffling of Kentucky’s Jefferson County school children away from their neighborhood schools was enacted to create more diversity in the classrooms. It’s a good cause, but I suspect that Amy Ashley might find few boundaries in diversity outside of the school building.
